Some commonly asked questions:

What are the benefits of online piano lessons?

The benefits of having piano lessons online are as follows. With more than one camera, you and your teacher will have numerous viewpoints to analyse how to achieve and improve your technique. By setting up your phone and computer in a specific way, we can assess your piano playing and technique in more detail. As such, we would also be able to show you how to achieve your goals with greater accuracy.

Your teacher will have access to all of their music and materials and be able to link to any music that your teacher would like to share with you.

You will receive full documentation of each lesson, which will be sent to you afterward. All of this can be done from the cozy hub of your own home, where you will have access to all of your favourite teas, biscuits and comforts.

What do I need to have an online piano lesson?

A smartphone, tablet or desktop

Although it is not too complicated to set up, you will need to do a few things in preparation.

You will need:

  • a phone, laptop or desktop

  • an internet connection

  • to download the app (if you are using a phone or tablet)

How do I set up my phone, laptop or desktop?

Hannah’s online piano lessons setup

If it is a laptop, then placing it on a table or chair would work well. If it is a phone or tablet then we could do the same but it would need propping up. We can also put a phone at the left end of the piano, where the low notes are. There is a little ledge here, normally occupied by tea, wine or pencils! If we combine these two viewpoints, then we can get an unrivaled view of your hand shape and general posture. The most beneficial views are to see the hand and its curve as well as what you are looking at.

How do I access PLUK’s piano courses?

You can buy the piano courses from your Head Teacher. If you are looking to learn other pieces of piano music such as the moonlight sonata or Fur Elise, then we ask that you send your piano teacher a picture of the music you are playing before the first lesson. Once the lessons are underway you will be working from the same music so you’ll be on the same page in different locations. Your piano teacher will then be able to see exactly what you see. You can also use the chat function, of the video call software that you choose, to share further information. Your teacher will use this to make note of anything else that you might need to remember. So whether you are in New York or Paris we’ll be on the same page.

Will it cost the same?

It will be cheaper as you won’t have to travel. Other than this, the prices of an online piano lesson will remain the same as a normal one. Our prices start at £30 per hour.

Are there any downsides?

The sound may be slightly different as the piano is being transmitted via the microphone on your phone, laptop or computer. The connection can sometimes be a little jittery but with a great internet connection, this will be unnoticeable. I’ve held numerous piano lessons online and there have been very few with issues. Realistically, there are so many improvements, that I can see this being a very strong feature for years to come. If the online piano lesson is not going well, for any reason, we will offer you another piano lesson for free.

I’m not sure if it’s for me, what if I don’t like it?

We offer the first online piano lesson for free. You can try it out and if you feel it’s not for you then you can still have piano lessons in person. However, if the connection is bad and the lesson isn’t as you’d expected, we are happy to offer you another one free of charge.

“It was actually better than my normal lesson. The extra camera angles were fantastic and Kevin could play along whilst I improvised. Pleasantly surprised and I can pick up my lessons face to face, when this madness blows over. ”

One more review!

"I was a little bit skeptical but it actually worked really well. Once I was setup, there were actually benefits. I recorded my piano lesson and the links that he referenced were neatly saved in my calendar event. Probably won’t do it like this for ever but for now I am won over!"
